Shop closed for orders
For a break when the site should stay up and only the buying should stop: "we are away from 20 December to 3 January". It needs WooCommerce, and it is the third choice under Page → Mode once WooCommerce is active.
- Every page stays open. Nothing is put in front of any page: the home page, the shop, categories and products answer as they always do, search engines see the shop as normal, and page caches keep pages as usual. No views are counted, because there is no page to count.
- Buying pauses. WooCommerce itself is told the products cannot be bought, so the Add to cart button goes, a link that adds to the cart and the cart and mini-cart blocks are refused, and anything already in a cart is taken out with WooCommerce's own message. Prices, stock and orders are not touched.
- Shoppers are told when you reopen. Where the button was, over the shop and category pages, and over the cart and checkout, a notice in your theme's WooCommerce style says We are not taking orders until 3 January 2027. The date is the Switch off at time under Settings, written the way your site writes dates. Write your own under Page → Shop Closed for Orders → Notice;
{date}in it becomes that date. With no switch-off time still to come, a notice with{date}in it, yours or the default, says We are not taking orders at the moment. instead, and the Page screen warns you and shows that sentence.
Some buying goes on:
- Products that stay on sale and Categories that stay on sale (a category includes its subcategories, and a product its variations), for a gift card or a download you still want to sell;
- Roles that can still buy, administrators and shop managers to begin with. Signed in with one of them you see the shop as normal, so check what shoppers see in a private window;
- orders you add yourself in wp-admin, requests to WooCommerce's REST API by somebody who can manage the shop, and subscription renewals. A renewal lets through the subscription being renewed, and nothing else in the shop.
With products kept on sale, the cart and checkout show the notice only while the cart is empty, because whatever is left in a cart can still be bought.
An external or affiliate product keeps its Buy product link and gets no notice: it is bought in another shop, which this mode does not close. On a block theme the shop notice goes over the shop page's product grid, the Product Collection block or the older Products (Beta) block.
Show the notice but keep taking orders refuses nothing: the notices show and every button stays, for a break when orders still come in but are sent out later. Left as it is, the notice then says Orders placed now are sent out after 3 January 2027., and with no switch-off time still to come, Orders placed now are sent out later than usual. The Notice field on the Page screen changes to match as you turn the switch on or off. Words you have written yourself are kept exactly as you wrote them, so read them again when you change the switch.
Switch it on with Close the shop for orders on the Dashboard, and off with Take orders again. Switch on at and Switch off at under Settings work as they do for the other modes: they take effect once you have pressed Close the shop for orders. Press it, and with a switch-on time still to come buying pauses at that time; nothing pauses until you press it. The Dashboard and the toolbar say Shop closed for orders until 3 January 2027. At the switch-off time, or when you press Take orders again, buying starts again and the page caches are emptied. The launch email is never sent for this mode: taking orders again after a break is not a launch.
Choosing this mode while your coming soon or maintenance page is up is different. Saving Page → Mode with Shop closed for orders picked takes the page down, and your whole site is public from then on, so that save is your launch. With people waiting, Save asks whether to email them that your site is live, as Disable does. Nothing is saved unless you say yes, and the launch email goes out only on that yes. With the launch email off, Save asks whether to save without emailing them, and afterwards says how many were not emailed. Your answer is to the question you were asked: if the launch email is switched on in another tab after you open the Page screen, an OK to saving without emailing still emails nobody, not even later when your store is set live in WooCommerce, and the message after the save says how many were not emailed. With the launch email on while WooCommerce's Site visibility still hides your store, nothing is asked: the email waits until you set the store live. The Dashboard's Set Site visibility to Live button asks you first and sends it on your yes. Setting it live in WooCommerce's own settings, which ask nothing, sends nothing: the Dashboard then shows the email waiting, with Send the launch email, which asks you first.
Otherwise, a save that was never asked emails nobody, and the notice says how many people were not emailed. That happens when somebody signs up after you opened the Page screen, when your page went up at its switch-on time after you opened it, and when you save this mode after the switch-off time has passed but before WordPress cron has switched the mode off. An imported settings file that takes your page down, by choosing this mode or by switching the mode off, emails nobody either and says the same after Settings imported. With the launch email on while WooCommerce hides your store, such a save or import says instead that the email waits until you set the store live. While this mode is chosen, the Recommended list on the Dashboard shows Send the launch email for as long as anybody on your list has not been emailed, except while a send is under way, while WooCommerce hides your store, or while the Dashboard already offers Send the launch email in a note of its own. It opens the Subscribers screen, where Send to … not yet emailed tells them.
The Design and Access screens, and the page's own text, countdown and sign-up form on the Page screen, belong to the other two modes and are not used while this one is chosen; the Page screen puts them aside and keeps what you wrote there.
If WooCommerce is switched off while this mode is on, nothing is closed (there is nothing to close) and the Dashboard says so. The mode stays chosen, so it works again once WooCommerce is back. The same goes for a settings file with this mode in it, imported on a site where WooCommerce is off: the mode is kept, and no holding page goes up.
