Does maintenance mode hurt my search rankings?
Not if you use the right mode. Maintenance answers 503 with a Retry-After, which tells a crawler to come back later — that is exactly what the status exists for, and a day or two of it costs nothing.
Coming soon answers 200, which is right for a site that does not exist yet and wrong for one that is briefly away: it tells a crawler your holding page is the site's content now.
