Why can I not put buttons on the checkout?
Because there is nothing there to share. Buttons attach to a piece of content through the same hook your theme uses to print it, and a basket or a checkout has no article behind it. Offering the option would be offering a rule that quietly does nothing.
A static front page is a page, so ticking Pages covers it.
